As AI continues to play a crucial role in our daily lives, digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are being upgraded with Generative AI technology. However, both companies are facing challenges that are delaying the release of their new features.

What is Alexa?

Alexa is Amazon’s cloud-based voice assistant, available on hundreds of millions of devices from both Amazon and third-party manufacturers. It enables users to control smart devices, ask questions, and perform various tasks using voice commands.

What Can Alexa Do?

  • Control smart home devices such as lights, air conditioning, and security cameras.

  • Search for information on the internet.

  • Manage schedules, set alarms, and create reminders.

  • Stream music, radio, and podcasts.

  • Place orders on Amazon using voice commands.

Developers Can Build New Features for Alexa!

If you’re a developer, you can create Alexa Skills or integrate Alexa into your products using Amazon’s APIs and tools to enhance its capabilities.

What is Siri?

Siri is Apple’s intelligent voice assistant powered by AI and advanced speech recognition. It is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.

What Can Siri Do?

  • Perform hands-free tasks using voice commands like "Hey Siri, set an alarm for 7 AM."

  • Search the web or retrieve data from apps like Calendar and Mail.

  • Read and send messages or emails.

  • Control Apple devices such as HomePod and Apple Vision Pro.

  • Provide top-tier privacy protection with Apple's security standards.

Apple plans to enhance Siri’s intelligence, but due to ongoing engineering challenges, it may take some time before users experience more advanced features.

AI Assistants Face Delays in Development

According to reports released last Friday, Amazon and Apple are struggling to integrate Generative AI into their voice assistants, Alexa and Siri, to compete with next-gen AI voice assistants such as OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode and Google’s Gemini Live. However, things aren’t going as planned.

  • Amazon initially scheduled the release of its Generative AI-powered Alexa for February 26, 2025, but the Washington Post reports that it has now been pushed back to March or later.

  • Apple is facing engineering problems and software bugs, delaying the launch of new AI features for Siri from April to May or beyond, according to Bloomberg.

The Future of AI Voice Assistants

Although Alexa and Siri are experiencing delays in AI upgrades, this highlights Amazon and Apple’s commitment to refining their technology. The focus remains on enhanced natural interaction, better user behavior learning, and stronger security measures.

The future of AI voice assistants is exciting, and we’ll have to wait and see how Alexa and Siri evolve in the coming months!
