In an era where AI is playing an increasingly vital role across industries, Perplexity — a relatively new company — is shaking up the market with plans to develop a new browser called Comet, featuring built-in AI. Their goal is clear: to dethrone Google Chrome.

Who is Perplexity?

Perplexity is a startup founded by former engineers from OpenAI and Google. They focus on building a "question-answering engine" that provides fast and accurate information, differentiating itself from typical chatbots. Currently, Perplexity boasts over 1.4 million active users in the U.S. and has achieved over 10 million app downloads.

Backed by giants like Nvidia, Jeff Bezos, and Microsoft (even though Microsoft holds only a small stake), Perplexity now has the capital and resources for rapid growth.

Comet Browser: Ushering in a New Era of Web Browsing

Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity, revealed that the new browser would not be just another "window to the web." Instead, it would feature an intelligent AI assistant that deeply understands user needs, helping users search, make decisions, and even carry out tasks automatically.

Expected key features of Comet include:

  • A customizable personal AI agent — for example, finding cheap flight tickets or ordering food based on your preferences.

  • Seamless integration with websites and various online services.

  • A smoother, faster, and more secure browsing experience than ever before.

The Big Play: Preinstalling the Perplexity App on Android Smartphones

To accelerate growth, Perplexity has made aggressive offers to Android phone manufacturers and wireless carriers:

  • Free pre-installation of the Perplexity app without licensing fees.

  • Revenue sharing from search activities, instead of charging high licensing fees like many big companies do.

Srinivas is confident that this strategy will quickly expand Perplexity's user base, with several new deals expected to roll out later this year.

Who are the competitors?

Besides Google, Perplexity faces other major competitors:

  • OpenAI, rumored to be developing its own AI browser.

  • Microsoft Bing, which is rapidly enhancing its Copilot and other AI features.

  • You.com, another startup focusing on AI-powered search.

Nonetheless, Perplexity believes their unique focus — "providing direct, accurate answers" — will help them carve out a successful niche in the market.

The Future of Web Browsing Is Changing

Srinivas concluded with an intriguing remark:

"The era of traditional browsers is ending. People want a smart assistant, not just a simple window to the web. And we want to be the ones who build it."

The world of internet browsing is on the verge of a new chapter, where browsers evolve from simple access points to truly intelligent assistants. And Perplexity is emerging as one of the most exciting players in this new battle.
